Set Design - Critical Role

Darktow | Echoes of Exandria | Edinburgh Live Show 2026
Edinburgh Castle's Venue contained a primary production challenge; aside from bringing set work to Scotland, it was placing it into a small stage space, and past small historical entryways.
This was a simple fix; by working simple.
Conceptual stages were designed with absolute simplicity in mind, keeping the set to bare necessity--while still creating a grand visual. To best fit this goal, I worked with the LED background in mind, having layering do the heavy lifting for our audience's experience. Out of three presented conceptual sketches, slide A was selected for progression.
A's design work focused on the jagged mountains of Darktow. Sloping, and unfriendly as the rocky pirate waters surrounding them. Ship-wreckage surrounds primary performers, with a visual focus on the DM (Dungeon Master's) stone throne. Not only do the sloping shapes define our unpredictability, but leaves room for backing animation elements as narrated by DM, to highlight this seat center stage and it's animated elements.

Final design work consisted of a full and isometric divided view of Darktow's set.
Each layered piece included a production slide deck of traceable flats for set construction team
(not pictured), and when combined with background elements, created a strong visual for Darktow | Echoes of Exandria.
